An idea for a calmer email app

Serene Inbox

Email, without the noise.

Mail would arrive a few times a day, at hours you pick. The few messages that need you would sit at the top. Everything else would wait quietly, in groups, until you felt like looking.

The idea, in three parts

  • Mail would arrive on a schedule

Instead of trickling in all day, messages would be gathered and delivered together at a few set times, so the inbox stays still in between.

  • No red numbers anywhere

There would be no unread counts and no badges. The app would tell you what is new when you open it, and otherwise stay out of the way.

  • What needs you comes first

A short list at the top would hold the messages that want a reply. People you know, receipts, newsletters and notifications would wait in their own quiet groups below.

What it might look like

A sketch of the app on a desk and in a pocket, with no badges and nothing red anywhere.

Both screens show the same morning: three messages that need an answer, four groups waiting, and the next delivery still an hour or so away.

A day with Serene Inbox

The hours below are one way to set it up. You would choose your own.

  1. Morning 8:00 am

    Morning delivery

The night's mail would arrive together, sorted before you see it.

  2. Then A few minutes

    What needs you

Three or four messages that want a reply would sit at the top. You would answer them, or not.

  3. Through the day Nothing arrives

    The rest waits

Receipts, newsletters and notifications would rest in their groups. The screen would stay as you left it.

  4. Evening 6:00 pm

    Evening delivery

The day's mail would arrive in one quiet batch. After that, nothing until morning.

This is an idea in progress.

None of this is built. The page exists so the idea has a shape to react to, and it will change as the thinking does.
